Boston Black Student Network Invites Community to the 7th Annual Holladay - 9/19/09 at MIT

On Saturday, September 19th from 12pm-5pm, over 500 Black Boston-area undergraduate and graduate students will gather at MIT’s Johnson Athletic Center for the 7th annual HollaDay. HollaDay, hosted by the Boston Black Student Network, Inc. (BBSN), is a networking extravaganza that provides an arena for area Black college students to connect and realize the professional, community, and political opportunities in the Boston area.

In 2003, a group of six college students from four different universities sought to revive what had once been known as the Boston Black Student Network. The loose network of Black student organizations had fallen into oblivion, and the group saw the need for its even stronger return. Through months of hard work, they created an organization that would not only maintain an open line of communication among the colleges and universities in and around Boston, but would also work to best utilize the knowledge, talent, and resources of the city’s Black student community.

Now, six years after its revivification, BBSN, an entirely student-operated organization, has grown to include over 1500 members of the BBSN Facebook group, over 2500 views of the
monthly Newsletter, and over 500 students at its annual networking event, The HollaDay. BBSN has been also able to partner with various student groups and Boston organizations to host informational workshops to benefit the Black student community throughout the year. Additionally, the organization continues to serve as a source of support for greater issues affecting the Black community at large. In 2007, due to the organization’s tremendous growth and existence of stable leadership, it finally branched off from the student groups who have supported its financial resources and became its own nonprofit organization.

This year’s theme is “HollaDay VII: The Stimulus Package”. Given the threatening state of the economy, BBSN believes that we can come together to truly change our current state, and the world’s. Attendees can expect to see the best talent performances from college students in the area, listen to an inspiring local speaker, meet and network with college students in the area and local sponsors and vendors that at the sponsor and community fair, free food and tons of giveaways, and the much-anticipated, Greek StrollOUT competition!
