IBEW Local 2222 kicks off workplace campaign for respect

Medford, MA - Only months after a new union contract was signed, Verizon management is engaging in a campaign to undermine employees' rights on the job and hinder their ability to provide quality customer service.

Members are being singled out for unfair discipline and constant surveillance. Union stewards feel increasingly frustrated because management is repeatedly violating hard-won quality and safety provisions in their union contract to increase productivity at any cost.

BOSTON/Allston - Rallying against impunity and US collusion with the 2003 Gas Wars massacre, 16 human rights activists visited Harvard Business School’s Latin American Conference on Saturday morning. Gathering just before 8:00 a.m., they brought the names and pictures of more than 60 people killed by the government of Gonzalo “Goni” Sánchez de Lozada.

BOSTON/Dorchester - In a working class Boston neighborhood, approximately 30 people gathered in the windy cold last Saturday to demonstrate against the Bank of America and corporate greed. This protest was the first action taken by the Campaign for Economic Justice, a project initiated byBoston Socialist Alternative and intended to grow into a community coalition that would campaign on issues like housing, layoffs and budget cuts arising out of the current economic crisis.

Hundreds in Mass. Kick Off Campaign for Passage of Employee Free Choice Act

More than 100 representatives from dozens of community and labor organizations gathered on Dec. 10 in Boston to mark International Human Rights Day and kick off a statewide campaign to win passage of the Employee Free Choice Act.

The Employee Free Choice Act would give workers a simple one-step process to freely choose a union. It would also strengthen penalties for companies that intimidate employees from trying to form unions and provide for mediation and arbitration when employers and workers cannot agree on a first contract.

Verizon Engineers Seek Fair Treatment and Collective Bargaining Rights in Wake of Announced Layoffs

A majority of Verizon's more than 250 outside plant engineers in New England have petitioned the National Labor Relations Board for a certification election to form a union with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Despite a 31 percent third quarter increase in earnings, on October 30, Verizon Communications told as many as 39 engineers that they would be laid off before the end of November.

Verizon Settlement Provides New Union Jobs, Protects Health Care

A new tentative three-year contract settlement with Verizon achieves union employees' major goals of promoting union jobs and expanding bargaining rights, providing good health care for both active and retired workers, and increasing wages and pensions for 65,000 workers from Virginia to Maine, the Communications Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers reported.

Verizon, Unions Agree to "Stop the Clock" -- Strike Action Postponed

The Communications Workers of America announced tonight that in light of progress that has been made in bargaining for a new contract with Verizon, it has agreed to "stop the clock" on the expiration of the current contract and postpone strike action while negotiations continue. The current contract will remain in effect.

The current contract, which covers 65,000 members of CWA and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) who work for Verizon from Massachusetts to Virginia, was set to expire at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, August 3rd.
