FOOD INC: A Must See Film. Viewing doesn't require a strong stomach; it does require a clear mind. Beautifully colorful cinematic illustrations of the industrialization of agriculture, the enormous investment in capital goods (factories, equipment, technology, infrastructure), and vast government subsidies for the cheapest, most unhealthy products. Shortcomings: Use of the phrase “increased efficiency” with no objective analysis or understanding of what that term means in an industrialized capitalist system.
BOSTON/Back Bay - My conversation Saturday with actress and comedienne Marla Gibbs and her daughter Angela Gibbs - actress, director, and producer - could have gone on for hours. But the two women, visiting Boston for the Roxbury Film Festival this weekend, were required to meet with festival organizers, and of course, see some movies.
BOSTON/Dudley Square and various other locations - A person only has one heart. But a city has multiple centers of life-giving blood. In Boston, known for its multiplicity of neighborhoods, one of those cultural organs beats at the Hibernian Hall in Dudley Square.
Walking hand-in-hand along a New York street, the elderly couple seem unremarkable. He is stooped with age and uses a cane. She is still spry and gently helps him. Profiled in the prize-winning film, “Herb and Dorothy,” the Vogels look like a granny and a grampa - straight out of central casting.
Appearances are deceiving. Megumi Sasaki’s documentary reveals an extraordinary couple. The film screened earlier this year at the Jewish Film Festival and is now at the Landmark Theater, Kendall Square, Cambridge.
Recently, Open Media Boston received a press release which piqued our curiosity. A brand new television drama, to be distributed across a variety of new media formats including digital television, broadband internet, and cell phones, has started principal filming here in Boston.
Dave Goodman of "RADIO with a VIEW" and Open Media Boston speaks with actor, director, producer Robert Townsend, in Boston for the 10th annual Roxbury Film Festival. Townsend's entry, "Of Boys and Men" features himself as the father of a Chicago family that recently has lost it's mother.
From July 28 - August 3, 2008, the Roxbury Film Festival celebrates its tenth year with features and short films celebrating local, national, and international filmakers and artists of color.
Actors Robert Townsend and Ruby Dee will make public appearances at the beginning and end of the festival.
Also there will be public discussions about issues impacting inner city residents and production workshops for youth participants.
Having seen pretty much every film Pixar has ever produced, and finding their work to be uniformly excellent, I went to check out their latest release, WALL-E, with high expectations - and I'm pleased to say that they were met. Director Andrew Stanton (of Finding Nemo fame) and his team have brought what could easily have been just another sci-fi cartoon throwaway to life in what will probably shortly be considered an instant classic.
